What was initially thought to be a case of extreme malnutrition and dehydration rapidly transformed into one of the most horrific instances of cruelty and neglect ever encountered.
Upon arriving at the urgent care facility, it became apparent that Chevelle’s suffering ran even deeper. He was missing half of his tongue, which was swollen with infection. A large wound on his chest had become necrotic, emitting a stench reminiscent of death.
How he managed to cling to life was a perplexing mystery, but unfortunately, his prognosis remained guarded due to the looming threat of sepsis. Chevelle’s innocent life hung in the balance.
Given the severity of his wounds and the concern that the necrotic skin on his chest could spread further, Dr. B sought the expertise of specialists at Kstate. Thus, Chevelle was transferred to Manhattan for specialized wound care. The cause of his severe injuries remained a mystery, prompting an investigation by the authorities.
Chevelle, despite his dire circumstances, fought with every ounce of strength he possessed. A life of immense beauty awaited him, and he refused to give up. The medical team, witnessing his tenacity, poured their love and care into him.
Within 24 hours of receiving IV fluids, pain medication, and antibiotics, the swelling in Chevelle’s tongue subsided. Miraculously, he was able to drink small amounts and swallow food on his own. A glimmer of hope emerged from the darkness.
Yet, Chevelle’s journey was far from over. Day by day, his emaciated body struggled against the ravaging infection, his skin turning necrotic. Weighing only 25 pounds when a healthy weight for him should be 50-60 pounds, Chevelle’s fight became increasingly difficult. But he persevered, for he knew there was so much more to life than the pain he was enduring.
Day after day, Chevelle battled against elevated blood levels and the relentless progression of infection. The necrosis in his skin posed a grave threat, nearing the bone on his rear flank.
The doctors expressed deep concern that if the infectious bacteria reached the bone, his chances of survival would be slim. His prognosis was extremely guarded, and the battle to save his life reached a critical point.
Yet, against all odds, Chevelle prevailed. Day 70 marked his return to Wichita after a challenging two-and-a-half-month stay at Colorado State University. The reunion with the volunteer who had initially rescued him was filled with tears of joy and overwhelming emotions.
Chevelle, our sweet miracle boy, had beaten the odds and found his way home. He was forever loved by those who had witnessed his incredible transformation.

Today, on day 160, Chevelle thrives as a testament to the power of compassion and determination. He expresses his gratitude to all those who played a part in his miraculous journey. Chevelle’s survival is a testament to the unwavering dedication of individuals who refuse to let animals suffer in silence.
