In a heart-wrenching discovery in a residential area of Moscow, a dog was found barely clinging to life inside a box, reduced to a mere skeleton. The sight was indescribable—a living skeleton, unable to stand or eat.

Urgent intervention was needed to save her, for it was clear that without immediate help, she wouldn’t last much longer.

This emaciated dog, now named Nika, was swiftly transported to a veterinary clinic, where her road to recovery would begin. The doctors identified her as a young Labrador-like girl.

Severe dehydration and exhaustion had taken their toll on her frail body. Fortunately, an ultrasound revealed that her internal organs were functioning normally. Although she couldn’t stand and her paw muscles had atrophied, no fractures were detected. The recent test results indicated significant impact on her kidneys and liver.

Nika’s condition suggested that she had endured weeks, if not months, of starvation, presumably confined in a cage or locked up. Her journey to recovery would be long and costly, but the remarkable resilience she displayed gave hope that she would survive.

After a few days, a woman responsible for Nika’s care visited her at the veterinary clinic. Even a video couldn’t fully capture the horrors the poor dog had endured.

Nika appeared unimaginably thin, and it was truly a miracle that she had managed to survive. A lengthy recovery process lay ahead, with an estimated month-long stay at the clinic.

While progress was being made, it was too early to make any definitive predictions. She lacked the strength to stand, and her hind legs suffered from atrophy, swelling, discoloration, and edema.

Efforts were made to dress her in stockings and provide massages in the hope that she would regain her strength and reflexes, eventually being able to stand on her own.

There was a possibility of surgery and ongoing rehabilitation, but the situation dictated the next steps. One thing was clear: the treatment and recovery of a dog in Nika’s condition was not a quick process.

Despite the provision of an anti-decubitus mattress, Nika developed two bedsores. The skin on her tail began to peel off due to necrosis caused by tissue malnutrition.

Unfortunately, she would lose half of her tail, which had lost all sensitivity. Below the hock joints, her paws had also lost sensitivity, and a constant battle was fought to preserve them.

Each day, the treatment plan was adjusted based on the evolving circumstances. The following week, doctors conducted tests, modified the treatment regimen according to the results, and introduced new medications.

The necessary supplies were provided to the veterinary clinic. Nika’s blood was thick, so blood thinners were administered to ensure the safest possible course for her entire body.

However, treating one issue risked exacerbating another. Although no weighing had been conducted, there were signs of improvement in her muzzle.

Tests for infections yielded negative results, offering some relief. In the days ahead, consultations with neurologists specializing in hindlimb issues were planned as the fight for Nika’s paws continued.

The necrosis persisted, but the dead skin had begun to slough off. Unfortunately, the expected response to antibiotics did not materialize, prompting further testing to determine antibiotic sensitivity, a process that would take two weeks. An additional antibiotic would be introduced. Test results showed little change overall.

Hematocrit and hemoglobin levels had slightly increased. While progress seemed to be at a standstill, efforts were focused on improving Nika’s paws, where sensitivity had been lost in several digits.

Even with just a glimmer of hope, every effort would be made to help her regain her mobility. The path ahead would be challenging, but the unwavering commitment to Nika’s well-being would carry her through.

After almost three weeks of treatment, Nika’s energy levels began to increase, accompanied by a weight gain of nearly two kilograms. Her appetite showed signs of improvement.

Personal hygiene remained a challenge, but as her legs gradually improved, she would be trained to walk again. Overcoming the obstacles of being stationary for nearly a month would undoubtedly test her, but with determination and care, she would persevere.

Numerous exercises and methods had been prepared to aid her in the process. When the time was right, a serious yet cautious approach would be adopted to help Nika regain her ability to walk. The journey ahead would undoubtedly be demanding, but with a resilient spirit and the support of her caregivers, Nika would defy the odds and once again experience the joy of mobility.
