A heartbreaking scene unfolded on the shoulder of a road in the Hokuroku area of Mt. Fuji. A passerby reported a dog crouching in a pitiful state, and several cars stopped, along with concerned neighbors. The owner of the house nearby admitted that the dog was theirs but explained that they couldn’t stand the sight of the suffering animal, so they had moved it to a side street to avoid hearing its cries.
The authorities were immediately notified, and a team of members and staff rushed to the scene. However, when they arrived, they found a harrowing sight. The dog was soaked in its own excrement from the lower half of its body and appeared to be on the brink of death, just waiting for the end.
Without wasting any time, the team contacted an animal hospital and, despite the owner’s negligence, took the dog for emergency treatment. Under the direction of the doctor, the caretakers spent painstaking hours shampooing the feces and urine that had hardened on the dog’s fur. They discovered that the dog was almost blind due to corneal formation, had a large amount of gravel in its stomach, was paralyzed in the hind legs due to spinal column formation, suffering from hypothermia and anemia due to malnutrition, and unable to eat or drink on its own.
The dog, later named Tsubaki-chan, expressed through its condition that it had been left to suffer for a long time. If it hadn’t been rescued that day, it would have likely died that night. Tsubaki-chan couldn’t feel the warmth of human love, and despite its inherent strength, it couldn’t regulate its body temperature as it grew older. The neglect and abandonment by its owner was a clear violation of the Animal Welfare Act, and it was a heart-wrenching reminder that such acts of cruelty still occur.
The rescuers were determined to give Tsubaki-chan the best possible care. Despite being bedridden and requiring full nursing care, they promised that Tsubaki-chan would never go back outside again. Though Tsubaki-chan may not have a long life ahead, the rescuers pledged to make its remaining days as comfortable as possible. The dedicated staff acted with urgency and prioritized saving Tsubaki-chan’s life, knowing that only humans can protect defenseless animals who cannot fend for themselves.
This incident serves as a reminder that neglecting and abandoning animals is not only cruel, but also a violation of the law.
