Six days ago, a report came in about a dog with an exposed and injured penis. Due to the overwhelming number of cases and limited space, the rescue team was unable to take in the dog immediately. Today, the team was informed that the dog had been abandoned at a local veterinary clinic that partners with the rescue organization. Despite the challenging circumstances, the team could not turn a blind eye to the suffering animal and decided to intervene.

Upon visiting the veterinary clinic, the rescue team consults with the veterinarian to assess the dog’s health and determine the next steps. The veterinarian explains that the dog likely sustained the injury in a fight or an accident, and the exposed penis is at risk of necrosis. The only solution is reconstructive surgery, followed by neutering to prevent further accidents caused by the dog’s pursuit of females in heat.

The veterinarian proceeds with the surgery, which involves suturing the damaged tissue and neutering the dog. The surgery lasts about 45 minutes, including the neutering procedure. The veterinarian explains that the surgery was complicated by the need to revive the tissue for proper healing, as the injury was not recent and the skin had already begun to scar.

Following the successful surgery, the dog is prescribed antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication, and diuretics for the next four days to aid in its recovery. The veterinarian, in collaboration with the rescue team, emphasizes the importance of proper care, including vaccinations, to ensure the dog’s full recovery.

As the dog recovers, the rescue team works to find a temporary home where it can receive the necessary care and attention. Dr. Katherine Betancourt offers her clinic as a temporary space for the dog’s recovery. Once the dog has fully recovered, the rescue team will work to find a loving, permanent home for the newly-named “Bot.”
