The sight was heart-wrenching – a beautiful dog lying in a pool of blood by the side of the road. We could only imagine the pain she must be in, and our hearts went out to her. We could see from the trail of blood that she had been hit by a vehicle, possibly the sharp edge of a motorcycle.
Despite the pain, the dog remained still, which may have helped to stem the bleeding. We rushed to her aid, and she looked at us with trust, as if she knew we were there to help her. We gently lifted her and placed her in the back of our ambulance.
We took her back to Animal Aid, where our team of veterinarians worked to stop the bleeding and clean and suture her wound. The surgery lasted only a few minutes, but it saved her from possible weeks of healing. The dog, who we later named Diya, was clearly grateful and showed her appreciation with wagging tails and licks.
Over the next 20 days, Diya made a remarkable recovery. The wound that was once deep and painful had now closed up, and she was ready to return to her neighborhood. As she walked ahead of us, she looked back often, as if to lead us to a secret.
And what a secret it was! As we followed her, she led us to a litter of puppies who had been abandoned by their mother. Diya had been caring for them, despite her own injury and pain. It was a heartwarming sight, and we were amazed by her strength and courage.
We were able to find homes for all the puppies, and Diya also found a loving home with a family who had been touched by her story. We are grateful to have been able to help Diya and her puppies and to have witnessed her remarkable spirit in the face of adversity.
